After reading
the chapter assigned and the discussion in class I realized that gender and
education can still remain a problem today. In the reading “Missing in Interaction”
I was surprised to see how teachers favored the male students over the female
students. I thought about that issue and noticed that the reading was written
about twenty years ago and figured and hoped that the times have changed. But after
reading the online article below, I noticed that gender inequality in the
schools may still be occurring.
There are many
debates about whether or not the male or female students are experiencing
inequality in the classroom. It was indicated in the online article that some research
believes that females aren’t getting as much interaction in the classroom. The research
also states that male students are pushed more towards the math and science
field unlike female students. The online article wasn’t all so negative. There were
multiple suggestions for parents on this topic of gender inequality in schools
and how to improve it.
Although
gender inequality may still be an issue in some classes I feel as if it is
slowly changing for the better!
Nice blog!
ReplyDeleteI too was surprised to see that boys were rewarded for being loud and speaking out of turn while girls were punished for it. In my experience from elementary school, it was everyone that was being loud and speaking up in class, not just boys.
On the topic of the school system emphasizing beauty over brains for girls? Do you think this affects them later in life? Maybe I'm not seeing the whole picture because I'm in college myself, but most of the females I interact with are either equally concerned with their looks and their grades, if not more concerned about their classes.
I liked your blog! I too was interested in the fact of the rules based on gender. I think it is still unbelievable how much the wold is separated by gender. It is unfortunate that "back when" they taught people to act like this and it has always somehow stuck with us. I do agree that we have come far but there are still so many things to improve on.
